HOW IT WORKS

From target retention to daily cards in three steps

1

Pick a retention target

Most adults plateau at 85–90% retention. 90%+ feels safer but triples workload for marginal gain.

2

Enter your card count

How many active cards per day? The calculator extrapolates cumulative review pressure over a year.

3

Compare algorithms

See FSRS-5 vs legacy SM-2 in minutes-per-day and total reviews-per-year, side by side.

RETENTION PSYCHOLOGY

Why 90% is the magic number

Diminishing returns kick in fast. Going from 80% to 85% retention costs more time than 85% → 90%, but going 90% → 95% triples the cost for a single percent point.

Forgetting is not failure. Some lapse rate is healthy — it forces retrieval practice, which is the actual memory-strength mechanism.

Calibrate to your goal. High-stakes exams (medical licensing) justify 92%+. Casual conversation fluency works fine at 80%.

Workload & Time Savings Calculator.

Calculate the exact reduction in daily flashcard reviews and annual study hours by switching from classical SM-2 to modern FSRS-5 continuous DSR scheduling.

Your Study Parameters

3,000 cards
20 cards / day
90% retention
Recommended baseline: 90%
Estimated Annual Benefit
+61 Hours
Saved per year with FSRS-5 for the same knowledge retention.
SM-2 Daily Effort
255 reviews
~34 min / day
FSRS-5 Daily Effort
179 reviews
~24 min / day
💡 Why FSRS-5 wins: Classical SM-2 over-reviews mature flashcards due to rigid integer interval formulas. FSRS-5 accurately models power-law retrievability decay across 17 personal parameters.
